IS 1310 Computing with Data 3.0 Credits

A first course in data science that introduces the field alongside roles, primary tools, skill sets, and ideas for working with data. Uses the context of data science lifecycle activities and data products to provide an overview of common types of data, where they come from, and the challenges and opportunities of working with data at scale. Course programming focuses on extracting, cleansing, wrangling, transforming, and reshaping data, alongside an introduction to exploratory analysis. The course includes practical use of command lines, shell tools and scripting, version control, and interactive programming. Students will gain an understanding of how curation by organizations and access to data and the reuse of collections form the foundation of learning applications and data products.
