SOC 2022 Intimacies: Sex, Love and Intersectional Lives 3.0 Credits

Examines how sexualities and intimacies are socially produced and shaped by intersecting systems of power. Drawing on sociological perspectives from both urban studies and sexuality studies, this course explores how gender, race, class, and place structure intimate life. Topics include the social construction of sexual and gender identities; changing norms around sexual orientations and practices; the role of urban spaces in enabling and constraining sexual communities; sexual commerce and its regulation; the effects of reproductive technologies and sexually transmitted infections on sexual norms; and the commodification and social control of sex and intimacy.
